First Impressions - The Front Door

You are probably familiar with the old saying, You never get a second chance to make a first impression. This is such a true statement. People often think of this saying when meeting new people; their handshake, eye contact, manners and attire. However, this can apply to your home as well. We all want our guests to be wowed and feel welcome when they arrive for the first time. Well that starts before they even step foot in the front door. Sooooo, let's discuss the actual front door today. It's a great place for that impactful first impression.

Curb appeal is making your home look good from the street. This includes many things like pretty paint colors, architectural details and landscaping. The front door is part of this package but isn't focused on as much. However, when people arrive at your house, this is the one thing they'll see UPCLOSE. So take a look at yours. Is it clean? Does it need maintenance? Or does it just need some freshening up? Here are a few ways to make a good impression with your front door.

First off, give your door a good cleaning. It's the simplest fix!

Paint/Stain - Weather takes its tole on the exterior of our homes. The front door is no exception but is extra vulnerable to wear and tear because it's used so much. Consider giving your door a fresh coat of paint, maybe even a new color. This can really add some flair to your home and modernize it. Stained wood doors need to be maintained too. Sand, restain and protect with a sealer. This will instantly give the door new life. Many front doors aren't wood, so really highlight this feature.

Hardware - The metal on your door is like it's jewelry. You want it to shine and stand out. Polish your door knob if possible. Some kinds may discolor or flake. If this is the case, you should replace it. Consider even upgrading to a higher quality or unique one. Door hardware can also include a door knocker and kick plate. If you have these items, make sure they are in good condition too or replace them if needed. If you don't have them, they can easily be added to dress up your door!

Replacement - Lets face it, some doors are just ugly and dated. They may scream that your house is stuck in the 1970's or not suit the character of an older home. Replacing your front door may be one of the best exterior updates you can make. It is really worth the investment. Your options are numerous. Try a style that is energy efficient, maybe has windows for added light or has unique details like raised panels or decorative iron.

Accessories - The extras you add to your doorway are the accessories. These really add personality and set the tone for what's behind the door. We all know about wreaths but let's go beyond that. Try adding house numbers in a creative way, a letter box, a cute doormat, colorful plants and flowers, or even vinyl letters on the door. All of these details will draw your eye to the door, show that you have style and care for your home...all of which goes a long way in making a strong first impression!
